The palera1n team, known for its creation of the palera1n semi-tethered checkm8 bootrom exploit-based jailbreak tool for arm64 devices (the iPhone X and older) took to X (formerly Twitter) early Sunday morning to share an exciting announcement.

palera1n team announces palera1n jailbreak for Apple TV.

The announcement, shown above, reveals that the palera1n jailbreak could be coming to the Apple TV soon enough. Obviously, as it’s based on the checkm8 exploit, palera1n for Apple TV will only support certain Apple TV models, including the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K (1st generation).

Despite the limited device support, it’s worth noting that palera1n for Apple TV will work with all tvOS versions spanning tvOS 15.0 to 17.4, the latter of which is the latest release at the time of this writing.

Another interesting fact that we can deduce from the announcement post is that while the palera1n jailbreak for iPhones and iPads uses a rootless bootstrap, it seems that palera1n for Apple TV will use a custom rootful bootstrap on real filesystem instead.

Apple TV jailbreaks have long been possible, but aren’t as widely used as iPhone and iPad jailbreaks. A popular app for jailbroken Apple TVs known as NitoTV will not work with palera1n for Apple TV, however the jailbreak will include support for tweak injection and include a tvOS file browser called Spartan:

As a semi-tethered jailbreak that requires the use of a computer to boot into a jailbroken state, users can reboot their Apple TV on demand, but it will boot into a non-jailbroken state. Getting back into a jailbroken state will require connecting to their computer. This differs from a semi-untethered jailbreak, which doesn’t necessitate the use of a computer at all.

It’s worth noting that Misaka for Apple TV recently launched, but it didn’t quite take off like the iPhone and iPad version of Misaka did. That said, it will be interesting to see how palera1n for Apple TV fares, as the jailbreak lacks a package manager to make finding and installing jailbreak tweaks or hacks an easy process. This was a job that NitoTV once filled.
