While fans eagerly await the release of its sequel, the original Dragon’s Dogma is still a great game centered around slaying monsters. It is an open-world game and players select a unique vocation which changes the way they approach combat.

Players will also be accompanied by Pawns who can be customized and help players take down monsters on their travels and during quests. While the game doesn’t have the best monster design when compared with other greats, it does have a fantastic exploration system.

6 Dauntless

Unlike most of the best monster-slaying RPGs, Dauntless is a free-to-play game, meaning that anyone can pick it up. It also uses cartoon-like graphics that make it easier to run for most players. In terms of gameplay, players can face monsters known as Behemoths alone, or partner up with friends or other online slayers.

The hunts that players engage in are extremely fun and the combat relies on a combo system that isn’t too punishing for newer players. The monsters of Dauntless are colorful and full of character, making each fight memorable.

5 Monster Hunter Rise

Monster Hunter Rise is the most recent installment in the series and easily one of the best Monster Hunter games of all time. As the name insinuates, the game is all about slaying monsters and players can expect a wide array of beasts to take down in creative ways.

While the story is far from the focus it still does a good job of immersing players in the world in between epic fights. Players familiar with the series can expect to see some familiar foes mixed in with plenty of new monsters, and of course, new ways to slay them. Where Rise does fall in comparison with Monster Hunter: World is in its graphics as the game was originally designed for Nintendo Switch.

4 The Witcher 2: Assassins Of Kings

While The Witcher series is best known for the books, The Witcher 3 and more recently the Netflix adaptation, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is nonetheless still a great game that is predominantly about monster slaying.

Armed with two swords including a silver sword for slaying monsters, players take on the role of Geralt of Rivia, a renowned Witcher. Unlike its successor, The Witcher 2 is not an open-world game, but while this might be seen as a downside, it does mean that the story is more linear and natural. Players who simply want to focus on slaying the best monsters in the main quests might actually prefer this installment.

3 Elden Ring

While even the most disturbing enemies in Elden Ring aren’t technically described as monsters, it’s hard to deny that many of them fall under the category, and slaying enemies is undoubtedly the aim of the game. Like any Soulsborne game, Elden Ring is not for the faint-hearted and to slay monsters and bosses, players will need to master the deep combat mechanics of the game and study the movements and tendencies of the monsters they wish to take down.

Thankfully, as Elden Ring is a fully open-world game, players can take their time and farm runes by killing or even farming lesser monsters around the map, allowing them to level up before facing the next boss.

Players seeking a monster-slaying RPG that they can enjoy with friends online should look no further than Monster Hunter: World. Hailing from an impressive series dedicated to fighting monsters this particular installment features some of the best combat and monster design, and players who prefer to seek glory on their own will be glad to hear that multiplayer is far from a necessity.

The graphics of World are easily the best in the series and are not far from competing with the best graphical games of all time. Nevertheless, it is the addictive gameplay that has players sinking hundreds of hours into this game with the developers nailing the combat.

When it comes to RPG games about monster slaying, there is no doubt that the 2015 Game of the Year winner The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the best. This heavily praised game, which has since been complimented with equally impressive expansion packs, follows Geralt of Rivia, who as a Witcher takes on contracts for slaying monsters.

Not only are the monsters incredibly designed and fun to fight, but the entire world that The Witcher 3 is set in is fantastically rich and immersive. Beyond slaying beasts and exploring the vast open world, the game’s story is just as enticing.
