NetEase Games has revealed the first gameplay trailer for Project: Mugen, which is an urban-styled open-world action RPG that takes inspiration from other games in the genre. The trailer makes it look like an anime-styled fusion of Insomniac’s Spider-Man, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto, and HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact. The Chinese publisher first teased fans about this project earlier in August, with a teaser website and some artwork that showed how players could explore the open world city. The game was formally announced at Gamescom 2023, developed by one of NetEase’s newest studios, Naked Rain.

NetEase’s Project: Mugen takes place in an urban cityscape. It has motorbikes similar to Grand Theft Auto‘s own vehicles, along with action RPG gameplay that similar to Genshin Impact. The real piece of gameplay that caught people’s attention, though, was ability to swing from place-to-place like Spider-Man.

This gameplay trailer for Project: Mugen shows the various locales of the open world, including streets, a train, and a beach. It then cuts to the player web-swinging like Spider-Man between two trains and the city’s buildings. The Spider-Man comparisons are strengthened further as the player character wall runs alongside a building, with the animations looking very similar to Insomniac’s game. The player can also use a bike or car to get around the futuristic city.

Alongside traveling across its dense open world map, players can engage in battles on rooftops or in the streets, where enemies are fought in an action-RPG combat style similar to Genshin Impact. This is even down to the flashy special attacks, with players able to use energy arrows, guns, psychic abilities, a car that can transform into a hammer, and more unconventional weapons to fight.

The trailer also reveals that pre-registration for Project: Mugen has also opened up on its official website, where gamers can sign up for updates regarding the game’s release. Many gamers on social media were impressed at the game, complimenting on how it replicates the features of past open-world games and work them into a single product.

Project: Mugen is currently in development for PC, PS5, and mobile devices.
