Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), a Japan-based semiconductor manufacturing firm, is building its first fab in Kumamoto, Japan. Today, TSMC, Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS), DENSO Corporation, and Toyota Motor Corporation announced further investment into JASM.

The latest investment to JASM will help the company build its second fab in Kumamoto. The investment is majorly backed by TSMC (86.5%) followed by SSS (6.0%), DENSO (5.5%), and Toyota (2.0%). The overall investment in JASM will exceed US$20 billion with support from the Japanese government.

With both fabs, JASM’s Kumamoto site is expected to offer a total production capacity of more than 100,000 12-inch wafers per month starting from 40, 22/28, 12/16, and 6/7 nanometer process technologies for automotive, industrial, consumer, and HPC-related applications, says TSMC.

The first fab is scheduled to begin operation in 2024, while the second fab is scheduled to commence operations by the end of 2027, with construction work starting in late 2024. On successful completion of both fabs, the company is expected to directly create more than 3,400 high-tech professional jobs.
