Fans eagerly awaiting the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 have been in full speculation mode since the gameplay reveal trailer at Sony’s PlayStation Showcase. The game is set to feature both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as playable protagonists facing off against villains like the Lizard and Kraven the Hunter across an expanded map of New York City. However, one question that still remains is the identity of Venom, who looks to play a key role in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with one fan theory suggesting his true identity could be a surprising twist.

While the gameplay shown during the PlayStation Showcase gave players a good look at new gameplay mechanics, it didn’t offer much in the way of the plot of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 aside from Kraven being the primary threat players will face and the symbiote suit that Peter Parker wears seeming to lead him down a dark path. This tease left a lot of room for speculation as to how the events of the game will unfold, which spawned a variety of interesting fan theories. More info about the game was revealed along with the first look at Venom’s in-game design at the Summer Game Fest showcase and a new theory suggests that perhaps Kraven and Venom are one and the same.

Kraven Could End Up Becoming Venom in Spider-Man 2

During an interview with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s Game Director Bryan Intihar at the Sumer Game Fest showcase, it was revealed that this incarnation of Venom will be like nothing players have seen before. For many fans who expected the usual story of Eddie Brock Jr. bonding with the symbiote to become Venom, this announcement set off a new wave of speculation as to who could possibly become Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s Venom. While developer Insomniac has been quite coy about the true identity of Venom in the game, fans have already developed a number of theories including the possibility that Harry Osborn could become Venom.

Another popular theory that has some evidence to back it up is that Kraven becomes Venom partway through Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s story. The premise as has been revealed so far that Kraven has come to New York to hunt the various heroes and villains that inhabit the city could lead into a plot line where following his defeat, the symbiote attached to Peter Parker could bond with Kraven turning him into Venom. This would likely occur after Peter is able to break the grip the symbiote has on him, leading both it and Kraven to become preoccupied with hunting him down.

The main evidence fans put forward to support this theory comes from the pattern seen on Venom’s chest in the artwork that was shown during the Summer Game Fest Showcase. While Venom historically features a similar spider-like design like that of Spider-Man’s on his chest, this version of the villain features a pattern that differs from Spider-Man’s symbiote suit, particularly around the shoulder area. Instead, this pattern looks similar to the design featured on Kraven’s vest, implying that the two have bonded and Venom has incorporated part of Kraven’s design as a result.

The one caveat with this theory is that it would contradict the statement made about this version of Venom being like nothing seen before since a Kraven Venom has appeared in the comics previously. This version of the character first appears in 2019’s Spider-Man: Life Story #3 where a version of Kraven dying from cancer bonds with the symbiote to survive and becomes a new incarnation of Venom. While it’s unclear if this comic storyline is niche enough to slip past the statement promising an all-new version of Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it’s an interesting theory to consider nonetheless.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on October 20, exclusively for PS5.
